Choosing A Kids Electric Scooter

By Matthew Smith

The door slams and its your child bragging about his friends new scooter. For the next few days, all you hear is how cool it is and how fast it goes. Its obvious that your child wants an electric scooter too, but which kids electric scooter is right for them?

Kids scooters have come a long way over the years. Forget about those kick scooters or push scooters. Those are old hat and kids electric scooters are gaining ground. How do you decide from all the different kids electric scooters which is right for your child? Take these issues into consideration when deciding on your scooter investment.

Kids electric scooters come in a variety of shapes and sizes and depending on several factors, including age of rider, size of rider, maturity level of rider will play a major role in deciding which electric scooter is right for you.

The age of the rider, along with the size of the rider are important in deciding on a scooter. The average 100 watt kids electric scooter is simple to operate and is perfect for ages 5-8. But even at age 8, it may be a bit small.

Most 100 watt and 140 watt electric scooters come with hard, solid rubber wheels. Though these wheels are good for this scooter, people are not told that with a rough road or rough riding surface, the wheels will get chewed up and in time, you will be replacing the wheels on these scooters. These scooters are rated to carry loads of up to 120 lbs, some rate as high as 200 lbs. However, our recommendation for these types of electric scooters would be no more than 60-70 lbs.

The 250 watt kids electric scooter is perfect for ages 6-14. Starting with these scooters, the tires are rubber with inner-tubes. This provides for a much smoother ride, along with a lasting tire. These scooters can handle the weight, as long as the inflation recommendation are maintained.

For electric scooters that are 350 watts or higher, kids or adults can usually get around nicely on these. The 350 watt electric scooters are also known as kids electric scooters, because that is what is seen throughout neighborhoods around the country. These scooters are built for speed, convenience, durability and safety. These scooters are for both kids and adults. If the child is mature enough to handle this type of scooter, then the 350 watt will not disappoint and for the older child, the 500 watt will not be outgrown.

I have trouble getting my scooter on its centerstand. Like a lot of other things, there is a technique to this. Even a small person can put a large motorcycle on the centerstand with the proper technique. Here's what I do: Hold the scooter with your left hand on the left grip. Put your right (or left foot) on the centerstand to hold it down. Put your right hand under the seat area, where there should be a railing or a grip. This is the place where you'll lift the scooter a bit. Now in one motion, push down with your foot while you tug back with your left hand and up lift up with your right hand. If you do all of these movements at the same time with the proper motion, you'll have zero problems.

Accessories for scooters include batteries and handle bar grips. Both of these items can usually be located at nearby stores or they can also be ordered on-line too. Handle grips can come in many different fun colors and can dress up a scooter. Make sure to wear a helmet whether riding a motorized scooter or manual scooter. It is important to remember to be safe in traffic too and obey traffic laws.

Scooter Performance Tips
1. You can also try replacing your worn drive belt. This will give you a few more MPH because a new belt rides higher in the pulleys.
2. Changing your roller weights. You can use just slightly heavier rollers for more top speed.
3. Adjusti your valves.
4. Install a new air filter.
5. Change the oil.
6. Put in a new spark plug.
7. Keep your tires at proper inflation levels. This also helps you get better mileage and prevent premature tire wear.
